Do's and Don'ts

  • Do shop local.Houston is one of the top 20 cities for local shopping. Some of top spots locals love to hit up include Manready Mercantile, Biscuit Home, Hello Lucky, Casa Ramirez Folk Art Gallery, and Space Montrose.

  • Check out the Museum District.Houston is home to one of the largest museum districts in the country, with 20 museum galleries, and cultural and community centers, all within four walkable zones. The Children’s Museum of Houston is the highest-attended youth museum in the United States and Rothko Chapel is one of National Geographic’s “Sacred Places of a Lifetime: 500 of the World’s Most Peaceful and Powerful Destinations.”

  • Don't worry about not having a car.Houston’s rail system takes riders from north of Downtown, through the Medical Center north of Downtown, through the Medical Center and Museum District, and all the way to NRG Park. There’s also plenty of bus service routes, taxis, and ride-sharing opportunities, and the ability to hike and bike. The City of Houston boasts an over 300-mile interconnected bikeway networks, spanning across 500 square miles, and over 128 miles of hike and bike trails. Rent a bicycle or try the bike-sharing program B-Cycle to explore the town.

  • Don’t put ketchup on your burger.Texas doesn’t have a lot of rules when it comes to food, but when it comes to burgers, ketchup is for French fries only. Mayo and mustard are for burgers

  • It’s always a coke.It doesn't matter if it's a Dr Pepper, Pepsi, 7-Up, a fancy carbonated beverage you bought from Central Market or a can of Grape Crush. It's a coke. When a Texan offers you a coke, the proper response is, "Sure. What kinda coke you got?" Not, "No, thanks. But I'll take a Diet Sprite."
